Grey Cast Iron

Grey cast iron, or gray iron, is a type of cast iron with a graphitic microstructure. And its name comes from the gray color of the fracture it forms, and this is because of the presence of graphite. Now, grey cast iron is the most common cast iron based on weight.

Grey cast iron is widely used for casting parts, for which the the stiffness of the component is more important than its tensile strength, such as, valve bodies, pump housings, internal combustion engine cylinder blocks, electrical boxes, and decorative castings. With the high thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity, grey cast iron is often exploited to make cast iron cookware and disc brake rotors.
