is a kind of metal casting process with the feature that using sand as
the mold material. It is widely used, and over 70% of all metal castings
adopts the sand casting process.
Sand casting is relatively cheap and sufficiently refractory suitable for steel foundry. Besides the sand, a suitable bonding agent, such as clay, is usually mixed with the sand. The mixture is moistened, with water or sometimes other substances, to develop strength and plasticity of the clay so as to make it suitable for molding.
