Shell Molding Process

Introduction:

Shell molding is similar to sand casting, but there is something different. In the process of sand casting, the molding cavity is a flask filled with sand, but in that of shell molding process, the molding cavity is formed by a hardened "shell" of sand instead. The sand used in shell molding process is finer than that in sand casting process, and it is mixed with a resin so that it can be heated by the pattern and hardened into a shell around the pattern.

Advantages:

Due to the resin and finer sand, shell molding process gives a much finer surface finish.
This kind of casting process is easily automated and more precise.
Common metals can be used, including cast iron, aluminum, magnesium, copper alloys, etc.
Shell molding process is exactly suitable for complex items which are small or medium-sized.
Shell molding process offers better dimensional tolerances
Shell Molding Process offers higher throughput due to reduced cycle times.
